Leadership Recognition

“Leadership in the OCDSB is the demonstration of personal initiative to achieve a positive outcome.”

Students

Students at Clifford Bowey School participate in an annual Swim-a-thon fundraising event. Funds raised through the event support the purchase of equipment such as swimming float belts, pool accessories and other specialized equipment. Our June awards assembly recognizes individual student achievement in life skills, practical living, work experience, personal achievement, communication, skating, swimming, and recycling. We recognize and value Character Education through assemblies.

Staff

Our staff members have a wealth of professional qualifications and degrees, with additional qualifications in Special Education, Literacy, Physical and Health Education, English as a Second Language, and Computers in Education. Many also have additional qualifications in the areas of Kinesiology, Child Psychology, Sign Language (ITP) at the interpreter level, Developmental Services Worker, Registered Nurse, Early Childhood Education, and National Lifeguard certification. Staff members participate in workshops to maintain up-to-date qualifications in First Aid, CPR, and Behaviour Management Systems. Administrators, teachers, educational assistants, office administration staff, and custodial staff participate in district-wide workshops as part of their on-going professional development. Staff leadership is recognized through personal interactions, school announcements and assemblies, school newsletters, and performance appraisals.

Parents/Guardians/Volunteers

Our Greening Committee worked to develop a fitness trail in the schoolyard which offers a variety of fitness stations along its route. The fitness trail is accessible to all students.
Recent improvements to our Primary yard include an accessible play structure and specialized surfacing to enhance mobility and help ensure safe play for our special needs students.
Parents/guardians/caregivers and relatives of our students donate gently used toys, books, and clothing, as well as financial gifts to help support school programs. Staff, parents, and community members support the Clifford Bowey Foundation through designated donations to the United Way campaign and the Education Foundation. The Clifford Bowey School community flourishes due to the generous support of our many community partners.
The Community Foundation and TELUS contributed generously to the renewal of our Snoezelen Room in 2012 and, most recently, to our Gym Equipment Project.
The Clifford Bowey School community benefits from hours of volunteer support provided by Nortel Community Volunteers, who design, create, install, adapt, and repair a variety of equipment for our students.
Our school has benefited from grants such as S’ Cool Life Fund allowing for the purchase of pool equipment to enhance our swim program. The Education Foundation provided an industrial strength washing machine for our commercial kitchen. The Community Foundation, TELUS, and the City of Ottawa contributed to our play structure project.
Breakfast for Learning and Ottawa Network for Education (ONFE) help support our School Breakfast Program.
Clifford Bowey School welcomes Developmental Services Worker program students and Social Services Worker students from Algonquin College, various Faculty of Education students, and high school CO-OP Education students for on-site training and practical work experience. Our school community benefits from their support while students gain valuable work experience in an educational setting.
As part of our on-going Parental Engagement series, Clifford Bowey School Council hosts workshops for parent and guardians on topics relevant to the needs of their child, such as Sensory Integration, and offers a Community Services Carousel evening to share information with our school community. Clifford Bowey School Council often invites parents and guardians from other specialized school settings to join these information evenings.
